Rent Fund Update: We have officially reached 50% of our total rent fund goal.

This week I finished Tamara Winfrey Harris’ The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative for Black Women for an upcoming bookclub meeting next month.

I left the book thinking it was a good primer about the different stereotypes that historically and continuously negatively impact the perception about Black Women. Directly speaks to the tired ideology that Black relationships and marriages are the sole responsibility for Black Women to save, or how being constantly portrayed as hypersexualized has led to the culture borrowing that runs beauty standards. It was a good one, and if you want to dive into Black Feminism, this is a good one.

A Bookish Kickback

This year marks James Baldwin’s 100th birthday! So we’re hosting a bookish kickback in his honor. Tickets range from $5-$10. Lite bites, drinks, and community.

This month we will be doing a screening of Stan Lathan’s film adaptation of James Baldwin’s classic novel, Go Tell it on the Mountain. Telling the journey of a family from the rural South to "big city" Harlem seeking both salvation and understanding and of a young boy struggling to earn the approval of a self-righteous and often unloving stepfather.
