YOUR WEEKLY BOOKISH SOURCE ON ALL THINGS BLK + BRWN.

Happy Wednesday Friends. Happy Black History Month.

first and foremost, a huge thank you to our hosts of the evening, casha gloria (the glory poet) and luna (beauty of biophilia) for putting on an incredible first open mic of the year. we always appreciate the poets and community members who come through and bless the space, as well.

the past few weeks, the theme of transformation keep coming up and with that in mind, i have been working on some big ideas and trying to get back in practice with things that bring me joy. i’ve been returning to some favorite reads and starting some new ones; spending more time with friends and family and holding more space for creativity. question: what are things that you hope to create more space for your life? what do you need more of?

what’s on our calendar? 👀

join us for a special Black history month potluck with our friends over at ivanhoe neighborhood council (@ivanhoekcmo) + black women making friends kc (@bwmfkc), as we honor our elders through storytelling.

p.s. we are also looking to add 2-3 more elders who would interested in sharing their experience and stories about black life in kansas city. feel free to email us if you are interested!

Whether you identify as femme or masc. presenting for colored girls is for us all. shange’s work and legacy has always been about celebrating the everyday lives of black and brown women while calling us to find joy in ourselves. this event will consist of community readings of ntozake shange, storytelling and communion.

what i’m reading currently…

my partner + i have been reading this classic together. a reread for me and first time for them, but it’s been super interesting to hear each other’s perspective on what intimacy and community means to us and how it looks for us. Somé reveals the role of spirit in every marriage, friendship, relationship, and community. She shares ancient ways to make our intimate lives more fulfilling and secure and offers powerful insights into the "illusion of romance," divorce, and loss. i would definitely recommend it to anyone who wanting to expand or even just hear a different perspective on relationships and how they operate in ecosystems.

i was sent an advanced copy of, all the men i’ve loved again, and have been enjoying this solo debut romance. Twenty years later, and Cora is staring her 40s in the eye, and has cloaked herself in loneliness like a warm blanket. It’s the safest choice. But then an unexpected reconnection and a chance encounter puts her right back where she started. The same two men, the same agonizing decision.Finding herself in this position—again—will test everything Cora thought she knew about fate, love, and most importantly, herself. All The Men I’ve Loved Again is a big-hearted coming-of-age story for anyone who’s thought what if about a past love and what it would be like to have a second chance. i am enjoying the flashbacks to that 90s and early 2000s black experience. our author also poignantly brings a very interesting father/daughter dynamic that i find refreshing, and a set of best friends that keep our author grounded in the way my little capricorn heart deeply values.
